Enhancing videos with images and text in DaVinci Resolve

Adding images and text to your videos can significantly enhance their appeal and convey more information effectively. Let's dive into how you can effortlessly incorporate these elements using DaVinci Resolve.

Adding an image logo

The first step is to add a graphic image, such as your screencasting logo. By accessing the media pool, you can drag a PNG file onto your timeline, placing it right above your facecam video. To make it look better, use the inspector to scale it down using the Zoom control and position it with the Position controls. You can animate the logo using keyframes, but a simpler way is to apply the Push transition from the Effects tab. This ensures that the transition only affects the logo without disrupting the media below it.

Animating with transitions

Transitions can creatively fake animations. For instance, setting the Push transition's ease to 'ease out' ensures a smooth animation. You can further customize by extending the transition for a slower effect or changing the preset to have it slide from the top or bottom. There are numerous presets available, such as the Blur Dissolve, which allows for horizontal and vertical customization, creating a focus effect when the animation plays.

Incorporating basic text

In the Effects tab's Titles menu, you'll find various text presets. Among these, the Text+ tool stands out. Drag it onto your timeline, type your desired text in the inspector, and position it using the Layout tab's x and y controls. You can adjust the size, color, and font to match your styling needs. The Shading tab provides additional customization options like adding outlines and adjusting their thickness and color.

Utilizing text transitions

Similar to the image logo, text animations can be easily implemented. Copy and paste a transition or opt for another effect like the Push transition. By setting it to 'push up' and extending its duration, you achieve a compelling slide-up effect. This method streamlines the text animation process, allowing more time for creative experimentation.

Exploring title templates

DaVinci Resolve offers animated title templates that are customizable in the Effects tab. To preview them, enable the hover scrub preview and explore options that fit your style. Once chosen, drag it onto your timeline and customize the text. Adjust the tracking for line spacing and use the settings tab for position control. If the template doesn’t fade out, simply add a transition at the end for a seamless exit.

Closing thoughts on text and image enhancement

Adding images and text can greatly enhance your video quality with relatively simple tools and techniques. DaVinci Resolve provides a robust suite of features to stylize and animate visuals, making your videos stand out. Play around with these tools and get creative in your screencasting journey! See you in the next one.
