Probably the hardest thing in the whole hiker_dev process: talking to a camera. Thanks Aaron Francis for screencasting.com, we still have lots to improve but your course made us take the leap! 🙏Toon Van den Bos
Hey y'all! Every blog post you read, every video you watch, and every course you take has a point of view. This course is no different. It’s my perspective on what makes a great screencast — both the final product and the process of creating it.
This isn’t the only way to do things, and I wouldn’t even claim it’s objectively the best way. But it’s what works for me, and I’m here to share that with you.
The first thing I care deeply about is encouragement. Screencasting is hard. Turning on the camera, talking to nobody, and putting your face out on the internet is no small feat.
I won’t pretend it’s easy, but I also won’t tell you it’s hopeless. You can do this. When I look back at my early videos, they were rough. But I got better. And so will you. I’ll be here to encourage you through the difficult parts and help you see your progress.
I believe in respecting your time and the time of your viewers. Being clear and concise is essential. Sometimes, I’ll record a video multiple times until I get it right. Not because I’m chasing perfection, but because I want the message to be clear.
When your viewers finish watching your video, I want them to feel like their time was well spent. If they think, "That was valuable, clear, and worth it," they’re much more likely to come back for your future videos.
There are two competing priorities I care about: creating a high-quality, polished final product, and doing it as quickly as possible.
Most of us aren’t full-time video creators. I’ve got four kids at home and plenty of responsibilities, so efficiency matters. Throughout this course, I’ll show you tips and tricks to improve your recording process so that your final product looks great without hours of editing.
We’ll cover simple adjustments that make a noticeable difference. When you combine them, your video will feel polished — and the best part? It won’t feel like a slog to get there.
These principles of encouragement, clarity, and efficiency will echo throughout the course. I hope they resonate with you as much as they do with me.
Let’s dive in and make something you’re proud of!
